Business Consulting > SCM

Supply Chain Management (SCM) means much more than to optimise the flow of information and to safeguard the operational logistics processes. In addition to creating a solution for the day-to-day operations the objective is to validate the existing processes in order to facilitate strategic decisions.

SCM starts in the company itself. In manufacturing companies in particular the internal logistics chains already form a highly complex network of operational sequences and systems. There is plenty of potential here to optimise the efficiency, transparency and controllability of the logistics-relevant flows of material, information and values across all involved departments - from purchasing via order processing, production control and warehousing to transport and shipping.

To find out where the elements of the SCM functionality can be usefully applied, the company first needs to gain a good understanding of its own products and its own supply chain.

Then the objectives of the corporate strategy need to be defined and qualitative and quantitative criteria determined, by which the success can be measured. Relevant questions in this area are: What needs to be reduced as regards stocks, what accelerated as regards throughput times or what improved as regards material availability? Starting from these premises, realisation scenarios can be developed, with which the company can gauge the existing improvement potential.

Reduce costs - increase efficiency

When optimising a supply chain, the company needs to check first of all to what degree an integration with existing solutions is possible and where new work flows and tools will be required. A well functioning supply chain usually requires modified workflows or even new organisational structures. When considering this the company should not plan for individual areas in isolation, because that would produce inaccuracies and distortions. As a consequence, small fluctuations in endcustomer demand might build up successively along the logistics chain. The greater such effects are, the more a manufacturing operation overreacts to customer wishes and is forced to build up stocks.
